Statement by the Foreign Ministers and High Officials
On the Situation in the Middle East
Petra, Jordan
May 11th-12th 2001

Foreign Ministers from Austria, Canada, Greece, Jordan, Mali, Norway and Slovenia as well as High Officials of Chile, Ireland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Thailand and South Africa met in a special session in Petra on 12 May 2001 and discussed the deteriorating situation in the Middle East.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Khatib briefed the Ministers and High Officials on the Jordanian-Egyptian initiative while Norwegian Foreign Minister Jaglund gave a briefing on the Mitchell Commission report.

The Ministers and High Officials endorsed the Jordanian-Egyptian initiative and the Mitchell Commission report and called upon concerned parties to implement the recommendations in Mitchell Commission report and the Jordanian-Egyptian initiative as the basis for ending the existing crisis, restoring confidence and resuming peace negotiations in order to achieve a just and lasting solution to the conflict.
